Publication: Materials for thermochemical energy storage and conversion: attributes for low-temperature applications

In this publication, Aleksandr Shkatulov (CIIAE) and Henk Huinink (TUE) together with collaborators wrote a review article, highlighting the main points:

Thermochemical materials (TCMs) offer some of the highest energy densities for heat storage, making them a promising technology across many industries.
Despite their potential, TCM systems face challenges including slow reaction rates, limited cycling stability, and complex multiscale heat‑storage mechanisms.
The review focuses on low‑temperature applications, such as domestic heating, adsorptive cooling, and heat‑moisture recovery.
Three main approaches to low‑temperature thermochemical storage are discussed:
Absorption in solids: hydrates, ammoniates, methanolates
Adsorption in porous materials: zeolites, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs)
Dilution in liquids
Each category’s strengths and drawbacks are analyzed, highlighting both benchmark and emerging materials.
The article concludes by identifying key research opportunities to accelerate the development and commercialization of optimal thermochemical energy‑storage materials
